Bing: Unnatural Links = Advanced Knowledge Of Links

Bing LinksOn Friday, Duane Forrester from Bing posted his 10 SEO Myths and honestly, most of it was basic stuff, so much so that I missed a wowzer in there that Mat McGee caught and told me to cover at Search Engine Land, which I did immediately.

In short, Duane from Bing wrote:

You should never know in advance a link is coming, or where it’s coming from. If you do, that’s the wrong path.

Now, his point is that if you know where a link is coming from, then it is likely something you asked for or encouraged someone to give you without warrant.

I then asked at Search Engine Land, "if you know that emailing me a story about search topics will lead to you getting a link in our daily SearchCap, that seems like it would be going against what Bing’s Senior Product Manager is saying is allowed?" I love quoting myself...

If I build something cool and I know TechCrunch will pick it up and link to it, I know it, I know it - Duane is that bad?

If you read the comments at Search Engine Land, you will have a good time.

Duane actually shared this article on Facebook and had no comment about my questions on that line.

Of course, it goes back to intent. But still, isn't this taking things too far?
