Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.

Google Search was unaffected by yesterday's Gemini outage, which is good to know. Google now lets you connect Gemini to Google Business Profiles for help. Google Business Profiles added WhatsApp numbers to many Google Business Profiles. Google is testing dotted underlined and shaded URLs in the snippets. Google Ads is testing images in Sitelinks. Google Merchant Center has a content API issue causing product feed slowdowns. ChatGPT Ad Manager now supports product feeds for ad creation.

Search Engine Roundtable Stories:

Google Search Was Unaffected By Gemini Outage
Google Search and its search generative features like AI Mode and AI Overviews were unaffected by yesterday's Gemini outage. Gemini, which is Google's AI product, had several outages throughout yesterday and we know that Gemini powers some of Google Search, so I was curious if the outage had any impact on Google Search.

Gemini Can Help With Your Google Business Profiles
Google will soon allow you to connect Google Business Profiles with Gemini. This will allow you to ask questions about your reviews, your local listing and performance within Google Maps and Google Search.

WhatsApp Numbers Added To Google Business Profiles In Bulk
Google seems to have added WhatsApp phone numbers to tons of Google Business Profiles automatically over the past week. Google has sent email notifications to some of those businesses, and in some cases, the numbers are wrong or they are not reachable.

Google Merchant Center Temporary Delay On Product Submissions
Google Merchant Center has API issues, causing a temporary delay in product submissions. Google posted the notice in the Merchant Center portal and on its status page.

Google Tests Dotted Underlined & Shaded URLs In Search Snippet
Google is testing using a dotted underline and a shaded URL for the search result snippet's URL. Yesterday, we covered how Google was testing a blue dotted underline for sitelinks within the sponsored results. But now we are seeing dotted underlines and shaded URLs for organic search result snippets.

ChatGPT Ads Gains Upload Product Feeds For Ad Creation
OpenAI has upgraded its ChatGPT Ads Manager tool to allow advertisers to upload product feeds that automatically create ads for each uploaded product. This obviously makes it easier to have ads on ChatGPT for retailers.

            Google Ads Sitelinks With Images
Google Ads is testing showing images within the sitelinks portion of the ad unit. I've seen plenty of images in the main portion of the sponsored search results but I don't believe I've seen images in the sitelinks area of the sponsored results.

            Google Workout Plank Game
I found this video from the Google office on Instagram of Googlers doing a workout, a plank...

I wonder if this is the same connection that is coming to connect your Google Business Profile to Google Analytics?

In any event, Google said this feature will be available in the "coming weeks." "Once connected, Gemini becomes an AI assistant that actually knows your business, having access to your real-world context like customer reviews, customer questions and performance data," Google wrote.

Here is a video of how it works:

Here are some sample tasks it can do for you:

Turn insights into action: Ask, 'how did my business do this month?' and Gemini can analyze your actual search impressions, direction requests, call data and customer engagement.

Seamless review management: Ask, 'help me respond to my latest review,' and it can draft a highly tailored response in your brand's voice, referencing the specific feedback the customer left.

Real-time profile updates: Ask Gemini to update your operating hours, post seasonal updates or identify gaps in your profile seamlessly.

You can ask Gemini to update your business information to keep your customers informed. Gemini can help you manage:

Business hours: Modify regular weekly schedules or set special hours for holidays and events.

Food menus: For food-related businesses, create, update, or delete menus, including sections, dish names, descriptions, and prices.

Media: Upload new photos using a public URL, or get media that you or customers uploaded.

Business attributes: Review and modify details like "Outdoor Seating," "Happy Hour," or "Wi-Fi." These options vary by business category.

Contact information: Review and modify your website URL or social media links.

Action links: Manage links for online ordering, reservations, or appointments.

Location details: Get and review the internal technical data and the status of your profile.

You can ask Gemini to help you manage customer reviews and posts for your business. Gemini can help you with:

Customer reviews: Get star ratings and customer reviews, including associated media.

Review replies: Draft or delete replies to customer feedback.

Profile posts: Create, schedule, publish, or delete Update, Offer, or Event posts.

You can access your Business Profile insights in Gemini to conveniently understand performance metrics and improve your visibility. Gemini can help you with:

Performance metrics: Analyze impressions, website clicks, direction requests, and bookings.

Search keywords: Review the specific keywords customers use to find your business.

Lisa Landsman from Google wrote on LinkedIn:

Over the past year, I've talked to so many SMBs about how they are using AI. A common theme kept coming up: AI would be infinitely more useful if it knew their specific business, rather than forcing them to re-explain who they are, what they do, and who they serve every single time.

I also get questions like 'what if Gemini could connect to my GBP and analyze my reviews, my performance and other aspects of my profile?"

Well, it's happening!

Here is a Google help document with more details on this feature.

The Google Business Profile integration with Gemini will begin rolling out globally this month, Google explained.

Forum discussion at LinkedIn.

Google has sent email notifications to some of those businesses, and in some cases, the numbers are wrong or they are not reachable.

I spotted complaints about this both on the Local Search Forum and on X. Len Raleigh said "Huge wave of (incorrect) WhatsApp numbers being added to Google Business Profiles right now." Rhea Velgos said, "Over the weekend, we received emails from Google regarding three profiles that were updated with a WhatsApp chat link in the Chat field."

The issue is, if the number is wrong or inaccessible, there is currently no way to delete those numbers. In the Local Search Forum, it says Claudia Tomina, who is a Google product expert, "confirmed this is a bug and Google is actively working on fixing it."

Here is what the email looks like:

But you should really check your Google Business Profile to make sure you did not miss the email.

Rhea added:

The WhatsApp phone number shown on each profile matches the practice's main phone number. However, these are landline numbers and do not support text messaging or WhatsApp functionality. When we attempt to remove the WhatsApp number from the profile, Google does not allow us to do so.

I heard Google is working on it
— Len (@lenraleigh) June 8, 2026

Yes! The latest zero click report shows searches to the open web fall to only 27%. A new study looks at the rejected Google review replies. Google is testing blue dotted underlined sitelinks for sponsored results. Schema.org added usage statistics to its schema types.
Search Engine Roundtable Stories:

Report: Google Zero Click Searches To Open Web Fall To 27.6%
Rand Fishkin and friends (Sparktoro and Similarweb) released an ongoing Google zero-click study that showed zero-click searches from Google Search have been sending less and less traffic to the open web and are declining at an even faster rate. In fact, the report says 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click and if you look at AI responses, it is more like only 27.6% of clicks go to the open web.

Business owners take the time to reply to customer reviews and then Google deletes them, and often, the business owner has no idea the reply was deleted because Google does not notify anyone - Google just removes the review.

The study is from GMBapi that says it looked at 12,752 rejected review replies and it showed this in summary:

92.6% were replies to 5-star reviews. Positive reviews are generating the most rejections, almost certainly because businesses (and AI tools) respond to them with templated, enthusiastic language.

Rejections spiked sharply in 2024. From 354 rejections in all of 2022 and 398 in 2023, the number jumped to 9,393 in 2024 alone. Either Google's filter clearly became significantly more aggressive, Google or the quality of the review changed.

The average rejected reply was written 1,221 hours, roughly 50 days, after the original review was posted. Delayed, bulk-scheduled replies appear in the data at a disproportionate rate, and that average has grown since our first pull.

Michel van Luijtelaar, co-founder of GMBapi.com wrote on LinkedIn:

From April 2025 onwards, the rejection volumes changes significantly. Total volume drops and the AI boilerplate share of rejections falls from above 70% to single digits in some months. Two interpretations: either AI reply tools got smarter (it does not align with our launch of AI replies functionality) and businesses stopped submitting poor-quality templates. Or Google's filter is operating at a different stage of the pipeline entirely.

For a deeper look at this data, see the full analysis post.

Forum discussion at LinkedIn and Local Search Forum.

So if you want to see which schema type is used more, you can just check Schema.org. For example, author schema is used on over 10 million domains but event schema is used on under 1 million domains.

Schema.org announced, "we are pleased to share a new dataset providing aggregate usage statistics for Schema.org terms across the public web." The dataset are updated monthly and they are aggregated at the domain level and presented in popularity range buckets. "This approach helps filter daily noise while highlighting meaningful adoption trends for researchers and toolmakers," Schema.org wrote. There is more about these usage statistics over here

Here are side-by-side screenshots of author schema and event schema showing the usage statistics towards the top:

Google posted about this on LinkedIn and wrote, "With Schema.org's new usage statistics dataset, we can find out! I finally got some support to finish the project and hopefully a few more cool things coming soon. It's hard for most open crawls to get the same depth of index as we have at Google, so we're happy to present some usage stats on schema.org terms, even if they are somewhat abstracted.

Forum discussion at LinkedIn.

There were other changes made to the document on June 08, 2026 as well. Those include the additions of nosnippet controls, crawl delay, X-Robots-Tag, accessibility and more.

The About Applebot document added a new section on AI, it reads:

Applebot crawled data may be used to provide additional context and up-to-date content when AI models are used to generate output for display in Apple products and services. For example, answering broad world knowledge questions in Siri and Search that may include links to sources and websites used to help generate the answer. Web publishers can opt out of their content being used in these broad world knowledge answers by applying the nosnippet meta tag to specific content.

In addition to the AI updates, Apple also added details about nosnippet controls. Here are the sections that were updated related to that:

Even if you disallow Applebot-Extended and tag website content with the nosnippet meta tag, your website instructions may still allow Applebot to crawl your webpages. Your content will remain discoverable through Spotlight, Siri, and Safari, as well as other system-wide features on Apple devices.

Apple will not use data tagged nosnippet as additional context and up-to-date content when AI models are used to generate output for display in Apple products and services.

There is also a section on crawl delay that was added, specifically that Applebot does not follow crawl-delay.

Applebot does not follow crawl-delay.

Applebot is engineered for efficiency and will adjust to minimize the impact on site owners. For example, to avoid overloading site servers, Applebot's crawl rate adjusts automatically when a site slows down or returns errors. Apple also caches crawled content to reduce unnecessary crawling. Identifying content that doesn't need to be crawled lowers infrastructure costs for site owners and makes the internet more efficient as a whole.

There is a new section on X-Robots-Tag:

Using the X-Robots-Tag HTTP header
Applebot also supports indexing directives delivered via the X-Robots-Tag HTTP response header. This is useful for non-HTML resources (such as PDFs or images) where meta tags can't be used, or when you want to apply directives at the server level. To apply a directive to Applebot:
X-Robots-Tag: applebot: nosnippet
Marking paywalled content
Applebot supports the schema.org isAccessibleForFree property to identify pages that are behind a paywall, metered access, or subscription. Add the property to your page-level structured data in JSON-LD:

And a new section on Accessibility:

Pages marked isAccessibleForFree: false are eligible to appear in search results, but Applebot will not use that content as additional context when AI models are used to generate output for display in Apple products and services. This signal applies at the page level. Section-level markup using hasPart is not supported. To opt out of having your content used to train Apple's foundation models, use Applebot-Extended described in the next section.

Those are most of the changes to this document.

Forum discussion at X.

Apple announced the new Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, it was a bit underwhelming. Google Ads is testing new top pages links. Google Shopping is testing linking directly to the retailer's page and not product detail overlay. Google Ads has a new Campaign Guidance with experiment power scores. Google AI Mode is testing citation counts and favicons at the bottom.
Apple had its big annual developer conference, WWDC, and as expected, they spent a lot of time showing off the new Apple Intelligence and what they are calling Siri AI. Apple says Siri AI is "an entirely new version of Siri, powered by Apple Intelligence."

Google Ads Testing Top Pages Links
Google seems to be testing new "top pages" links within the Google Ads sponsored listings. These look like sitelinks or those old tags but they are titled "Top pages."

Google Shopping Results Tests Linking Directly To Merchant Site
Google is testing directly linking to merchant/retailer web sites, instead of to product listing overlays within the Google Shopping results. Generally, when you click on a product within Google Search, Google will open a new side panel overlay window that has more details about that product.

New Google Ads Campaign Guidance With Experiment Power Score
Google Ads has a new feature named Campaign Guidance that will give you an "Experiment Power" score that will show advertisers "the likelihood of achieving statistically significant results, along with actionable recommendations to improve your experiments and make informed decisions," Google wrote.
Google is testing moving the results count with favicons from above the citations and links cards in the AI Mode results, to under/below the citations and links cards. I am not sure if this will make a difference either way to publishers, but Google is always testing changes.
